EEG correlates of startle reflex with reactivity to eye opening in psychiatric disorders: preliminary results.

چکیده
Previous studies have shown alterations of eyeblink reflex in patients with various psychiatric disorders. It has previously been demonstrated by our group that EEG measures of the reactivity to eye opening could effectively predict patient-reported startle response in patients with acute stress reaction. In our present study, EEG spectral power analysis and eyeblink electrical startle responses were acquired from a total of 39 patients diagnosed with various psychiatric disorders: 7 patients with schizophrenia, 10 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), 10 patients with panic disorder, 5 patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and 7 patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). EEG percent power data of each frequency band (delta, theta, alpha, beta) obtained from the 19 leads under open or closed eyelid conditions were used to calculate the arithmetical difference between eyes-open and eyes-closed states as representative of "EEG reactivity to eye opening". Data was analyzed separately for each diagnostic group. For all of the disorders, right-sided R2c (contralateral secondary component) latency was the single eyeblink startle measure that was found to be significantly correlated with EEG reactivity to eye opening. The correlation was most significant for right temporal theta frequency in schizophrenia, right temporal theta frequency in MDD, left central beta frequency in panic disorder, left parietotemporal delta frequency in PTSD and right occipital alpha frequency in GAD. Findings showed a newly identified pattern that has potential scientific and clinical value with respect to psychiatric medicine.

Startle reactivity in the long-term after severe accidental injury: preliminary data.
An exaggerated startle response is one of the core hyperarousal symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Heightened startle eye-blink magnitude and reduced habituation of this response in PTSD patients have been reported in several studies. However, it is unclear whether this is an enduring characteristic of individuals vulnerable for PTSD or to which degree trauma-exposed individuals ...
متن کاملThe startle reflex in schizophrenia: habituation and personality correlates.
Schizophrenia has long been associated with abnormal patterns of arousal that are thought to reflect disturbances in the reticular-activating system of the brain. Psychophysiological investigations of sensory responsivity have repeatedly demonstrated reduced reactivity and habituation to moderately intense stimuli in patients with schizophrenia. While not traditionally used as a measure of phys...
متن کاملVoluntary emotion regulation in anorexia nervosa: A preliminary emotion-modulated startle investigation.
Emotion regulation difficulties are implicated in the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). However, research has been limited by an almost exclusive reliance on self-report. This study is the first to use the emotion-modulated startle paradigm (EMSP) to investigate emotional reactivity and voluntary emotion regulation in individuals with AN. Twenty women with AN viewed negative...
متن کاملGreater general startle reflex is associated with greater anxiety levels: a correlational study on 111 young women
Startle eyeblink reflex is a valid non-invasive tool for studying attention, emotion and psychiatric disorders. In the absence of any experimental manipulation, the general (or baseline) startle reflex shows a high inter-individual variability, which is often considered task-irrelevant and therefore normalized across participants. Unlike the above view, we hypothesized that greater general star...

Objective : the studies indicate that the "eye-blink" components of "acoustic startle reflex" can be modulated through emotionally slide stimuli. Pleasant stimulants reduce eye-blink amplitude, whereas unpleasant stimulants enhance them. Method: the present study examines the modulation of the acoustic startle reflexes through a short film clips (2-min), classified as pleasant, unpleasant and...
